The Clock Stops: Delhi's Fuel Ban for Older Vehicles Gets a Reprieve

In a significant development for vehicle owners across Delhi-NCR, the much-anticipated fuel ban on "End-of-Life" (EOL) vehicles has been put on hold. Originally slated to come into effect on July 1, 2025, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the central body overseeing air quality in the region, has pushed back the implementation date to November 1, 2025.

This means that owners of vehicles deemed "overage" – specifically diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years – will continue to have access to fuel in the national capital for a few more months.

A Phased Approach for NCR

The delay isn't just limited to Delhi. The CAQM has outlined a staggered approach for the wider National Capital Region. While the ban will now commence in Delhi and five high-vehicle-density NCR districts – Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar, and Sonipat – from November 1, 2025, the rest of the NCR will see the ban enforced from April 1, 2026.

This revised timeline, officially communicated by the CAQM, states: "All End of Life (EOL) vehicles shall be denied fueling w.e.f. 01.11.2025 in the NCT of Delhi and 5 high vehicle density districts of Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar and Sonipat and w.e.f. 01.04.2026 in the rest of NCR.”

Why the Sudden Brake?

The decision to delay comes hot on the heels of pleas from the Delhi government. Just a day before the CAQM's announcement, Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa publicly urged the commission to postpone the ban.

According to an official statement from the CAQM, the Delhi government, in a letter dated July 3, highlighted "some operational and infrastructural challenges in implementation of direction No 89 dated April 23, 2025." This particular direction was the one originally mandating the immediate fuel ban for EOL vehicles.

The 24th meeting of the CAQM, held recently, saw intense deliberation on the issue flagged by the Delhi government, ultimately leading to the amendment of Direction 89, allowing EOL vehicles to continue receiving fuel until November 1st. This move suggests a pragmatic approach by the authorities, acknowledging potential public inconvenience and logistical hurdles associated with an immediate, widespread enforcement.
